In English, we sometimes add a few extra of the vowel, to exaggerate the sound of the word, to add emphasis. So "wow" is normal wow, but "woooow" is extra wow. So "lmao" is normal, but "lmaooooo" is extra lmao, so they thought it was extra funny.
